Niantic and East Lyme, CT Community

If you’re wondering how to keep your child engaged, learning, and having fun during the long summer break in East Lyme, Connecticut, we’ve got just the answer: summer reading! And not the boring kind—East Lyme Public Schools have partnered with the East Lyme Public Library to make reading a fun, prize-filled adventure that brings the community together one book at a time.

So, grab a comfy chair, a good book, and maybe even a cold lemonade—we’re about to show you why living in East Lyme means learning doesn’t stop when school does.

Why Summer Reading Matters More Than You Think

We all know that summer is a time to relax, unwind, and enjoy a slower pace of life. But did you know it’s also a critical time to keep young minds active? The East Lyme Public Schools summer reading program is designed to help students maintain their reading skills while school is out. It’s a way to prevent the dreaded “summer slide”—when reading levels can drop after months away from structured learning.

But this isn’t just about academics. It’s about encouraging kids to explore what interests them—fantasy, sports, science fiction, or graphic novels. Students are invited to read anything that sparks their curiosity. It’s not just allowed—it’s encouraged!

Parents, you’re part of the team, too. Help your child choose books that are “just right”—challenging enough to grow their skills, but not so tough that they lose interest. And best of all? Reading together is one of the easiest and most meaningful ways to connect with your child. Just 15 minutes a day can turn into lifelong memories.

How the Summer Reading Program Works

Here’s where things get exciting. East Lyme Public Schools and the East Lyme Public Library have partnered to make reading not only enjoyable but also rewarding. Here’s how your child can get involved:

  • Step 1: Visit the East Lyme Public Library and pick up a reading log at the Circulation Desk.

  • Step 2: For every book your child reads (or listens to) or for each library program they attend, record it in the reading log.

  • Step 3: For each entry, your child will earn a prize drawing ticket. That means the more they read, the more chances they have to win!

Now here’s the kicker—students who turn in their reading logs and tickets by September 13 are entered into a drawing for real prizes. We’re talking Amazon gift cards and other fun items. High schoolers at East Lyme High School even get special prize entries donated by the school itself.

And if your student completes 10 reading or library activities, they’ll win a bonus: the Library’s Adult Summer Reading Challenge Prize—a stylish East Lyme Public Library glass. Who says adults get to have all the good mugs?

Why East Lyme Families Love It Here

Programs like this are part of what makes East Lyme a great place to live. It’s not just about strong academics—it’s about community. Parents, educators, librarians, and students all work together to make learning a part of everyday life, even outside the classroom. And with the East Lyme Public Library right at the heart of it, there’s always a reason to stop in, explore, and be part of something positive.

Whether you’re a longtime resident or thinking about moving to East Lyme, the commitment to student growth and family engagement is something you’ll feel right away. Summer reading isn’t a chore—it’s a celebration.
